With The Happy Accident, Puerto Rican filmmaker Paloma Suau delves into the life of acclaimed artist Antonio Martorell as a figure artist, stalwart worker, and teacher. The Happy Accident recognizes the element of surprise as a valuable asset in the creative process. The story weaves Martorell’s grand arch history; his philosophical legacy, his lessons; and the auteur’s own breakthrough from a long and painful time of artistic paralysis and existential struggle. It’s a universal tale about a teacher, a student, and the art of living.

Antonio “Toño” Martorell es considerado uno de los artistas más importantes en la historia de Puerto Rico, el Caribe moderno y América Latina. El accidente feliz cuenta la historia de Antonio Martorell desde la perspectiva de la directora Paloma Suau. Intentando superar una crisis existencial, Paloma se aventura a descubrir el secreto de Toño. ¿Qué es lo que hace para poder ser él?
Su crisis se convierte en catarsis al practicar los principios filosóficos, la ética de trabajo y los compromisos morales de Martorell.
El film remite al reconocimiento del elemento sorpresa como un instante valioso en el trabajo creativo. Cuando un giro inesperado rompe el estado de elaboración y obliga a una reflexión y ajuste de planes en la creación, se da el momento del accidente feliz.
El concepto fílmico original basado en vida y obra del artista se desdobla bajo el signo del “accidente feliz”. Entregándose al poder transformador Martorell, Paloma se sumerge en el mundo singular del artista, usando sus lecciones como anclaje para mover líneas narrativas: la vida y obra del maestro Martorell, su legado filosófico y su propia experiencia detrás de la cámara y frente a ella. El lente de Paloma se torna espejo.
La construcción del documental, enfatiza la riqueza visual de los trabajos del artista como primer plano y fondo a los testimonios de sus amigos, colaboradores, discípulos, colegas y personalidades de la cultura puertorriqueña. El recorrido visual y temático va formando un entramado lleno de ternura. Vemos evidencia concreta de que Toño es un ejemplo de reinvención, supervivencia, autogestión y producción creativa insaciable a pesar de las innumerables tragedias que le ha tocado superar.
Durante los últimos cincuenta años, Toño, ha captivado a generaciones de creadores, activistas, escritores, educadores, políticos, humanistas, el FBI, políticos y a su pueblo en general con su trazo magistral, su mirada y su palabra. Su obra es un caleidoscopio prolífico de formas, colores, estilos, texturas, materiales, escritos, caligrafía, serigrafía, poemas, literatura, libros, desde esculturas, a cuadros, a instalaciones, a “performance”. Antonio “Toño” Martorell, is regarded as one of the most important – and living- artists in the history of Puerto Rico, a figure for modern Caribbean and Latin American art. With The Happy Accident , Puerto Rican filmmaker Paloma Suau delves into the life of Martorell as a figure artist, stalwart worker, and teacher. The Happy Accident is Martorell’s story told through Suau’s first person narration. The story weaves the narrative onto her quest to seek out Toño’s secret, what does he do in order to be him? And, how an existential paralysis became a catharsis when practicing the philosophical principles of Martorell’s work ethic and moral commitments.
The Happy Accident recognizes the element of surprise as a valuable asset in the creative process. Through Toño, the mentor’s process, her lens becomes a mirror - Paloma the woman, artist, and filmmaker shifts the narrative approach to her subject, extracting and presenting the transformational power of Toño’s singular approach to life. She seeks his lessons using them as her anchors to thrust her sudden three narratives forward: Martorell’s grand arch history; his philosophical legacy, his lessons; and the auteur’s own breakthrough from a long and painful time of artistic paralysis and existential struggle.
Built upon hundreds of images of works of art, a dance piece, workshop excerpts, exhibitions, the story flows with testimonies from his friends, collaborators, disciples, colleagues, and figures of Puerto Rican culture. The point of view streams through with tenderness. And we see hard proof, zooming in on him, that in spite of every challenge the artist is an example of reinvention, survival, and untiring creative production.
For the past 50 years the artistry of Toño’s hand, eye, and word have captivated generations of creatives, activists, writers, educators, politicians, humanists, the FBI, scoundrels, the press, and more. Martorell’s body of work is a prolific kaleidoscope of forms, colors, textures, materials, writings, calligraphy, serigraphy, poems, literature, photographs, books, from sculptures to paintings to portraits, and performance art. The Happy Accident is both a personal tale and visual thematic web journey of an artistic figure of historical transcendence. But told simply, the film reflects on the universal principles of life and art through a teaching artist, who by being his own best example of inspiration and transformation, changes lives.

"Que buena excusa para empezar de nuevo"
Lo que comenzó como un documental del artista puertorriqueño Antonio Martorell, se convirtió en la crónica de aprendizaje, transformación y la posibilidad de felicidad a pesar de la destrucción y la crisis a través de una sinergia de amor y arte. El giro hacia una narrativa en primera persona nos forzó a dejarnos llevar por el proceso. Ambos estuvimos de acuerdo y nos lanzamos juntos a la aventura de El accidente feliz
Toño era un personaje mágico a quien conozco desde la infancia.
Me identificaba con su pasión por el trabajo y su capacidad de reinventarse, me ha fascinado desde niña. Nunca olvido como, hace más de 20 años, recién graduada de escuela de cine, comencé a documentarlo. Pero esa misma pasión por el trabajo, desató una vida intensa de viajes, proyectos, experiencias y mudanzas… El documental de Toño quedó sin terminar, flotando en el aire…
Todavía no me creo su respuesta cuando le tuve que confesar que todo aquel material había desaparecido. Me miró sonriendo y respondió: "Que buena excusa para empezar de nuevo". Otro accidente feliz, había que decir que sí.
El reto se convirtió en un juego fascinante de como retratar al retratista. La historia de Antonio Martorell se cuenta a través de anécdotas espontáneas que surgen durante 3 años de filmación. En el proceso, fui descubriendo mi obra favorita: su filosofía de vida. Empecé a identificar lecciones que convierten esta película en una especie de manual de instrucciones para superar la crisis.
No fue fácil. Los obstáculos eran cada vez más contundentes. Pasó de todo; equipos dañados, retrasos por falta de presupuesto, el huracán María… Con cada tropiezo Toño daba cátedra de reinvención, supervivencia, pero sobre todo de que cada uno de nosotros tiene todos la capacidad de tomar esa decisión consciente ser feliz.

"What a great excuse to start over"
The project started out as a documentary on the life and work of Antonio Martorell but was transformed in the process. It turned unexpectedly into a introspective live experiment about resilience, reinvention and the possibility of happiness in spite of crisis and destruction through the synergy of love and art.
The turn towards a first person introspection forced us to reflect on the plans we had set out for the film, but we were both in agreement that it was a fortuitous twist, and that’s when The Happy Accident happened.
That ability to reinvent oneself has always fascinated me, but in regards to Toño it has almost been an hypnotic. I can never forget that I started to do a documentary on his life 20 years ago. As soon as I finished film school I started documenting this inspiring character. But, many opportunities came to me and the enthusiasm for my work led me away and carried me onto a successful and intense career with many other amazing artists, projects, travel, experiences, and changes. Toño’s documentary was left unfinished.
I still kind of cannot believe his, "what a good excuse to start over," response after I told him I had lost all the first material we had filmed - that’s another happy accident, and what a galant disposition. The challenge became a fascinating game about how to portray the artist through spontaneous anecdotes that arose during the three-years of filming. I began to identify lessons that turn this movie into a kind of instruction manual to overcome any crisis. It was not easy. As the process evolved the obstacles became greater and more daunting. Everything happened, from damaged equipment, grant funding delays, to
Hurricane María. My only option was to face my fears and immerse myself in Toño’s practiced philosophy. He made me realize that each one of us has the ability to make the conscious decision to be happy, in spite of the harshest of circumstances. The Happy Accident changed my life forever, learning through him and with him and telling his story. It’s a universal tale, a teacher, a lost student, and about the art of living.
About Antonio Martorell
El artista
Nace en San Juan en 1939. Reside y trabaja en Ponce, Puerto Rico. Pintor, dibujante, escultor, grabador, comunicador, performero, periodista de prensa, radio, televisión y escritor. Estudió Diplomacia en Georgetown University en Washington DC, estudia pintura con Julio Martín Caro en Madrid y grabado con Lorenzo Homar en el Taller de Artes Gráficas del Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña. Funda el Taller Alacrán en 1969. Desde el 1986 es artista residente de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Cayey.
Su obra ha sido exhibida y premiada individual y colectivamente tanto en Puerto Rico como en el extranjero y figura en importantes colecciones privadas y públicas de Puerto Rico, Latinoamérica, Europa y los Estados Unidos. También ha creado obras de arte público en Puerto Rico y otros países.
Ha publicado tres libros: La piel de la memoria, El libro dibujado/el dibujo librado y El velorio (no-vela). En el volumen Antonio Martorell: La aventura de la creación el autor Antonio T. Díaz-Royo nos muestra la trayectoria del multifacético creador. Próximamente se publicará su más reciente libro Pierdencuentra.
Por más de 30 años colabora con Rosa Luisa Márquez en producciones gráfico-teatrales y son anfitriones del programa radial Un, dos, tres probando por Radio Universidad de Puerto Rico. Participa en el programa En la punta de la lengua de WIPR-TV donde entrevista a artistas visuales. Esta serie televisiva ha sido galardonada con 5 premios Emmy.
Durante su larga trayectoria se le han otorgado un sinnúmero de premios y galardones. Le han sido otorgados cuatro Doctorados Honoris Causa, por la Universidad del Turabo en Caguas (1997), por la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Cayey (2006), por el Instituto Superior de Arte en la Habana, Cuba (2009) y Doctorado Honoris Causa como “Doctor of Sciences (D.Sc)” Escuela de Medicina de Ponce, 2018. En 2008 fue incorporado como miembro de la Academia Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española y en 2009 recibió la Medalla Haydée Santamaría y la Medalla de la Cultura, dos de las condecoraciones más importantes que otorga Cuba. Fue nombrado Humanista del Año por la Fundación Puertorriqueña de las Humanidades en el 2007 y recibió la Encomienda de la Orden del Mérito Civil otorgada por Juan Carlos I, Rey de España en el 2014.
The artist
Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico in 1939, Antonio Martorell lives and works in La Playa de Ponce . He has been artist-in-residence for close to 25 years at the University of Puerto Rico in Cayey.
He keeps workshops in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico and El Barrio in New York City. In 2006, his residence at the University of Puerto Rico was destroyed by arsonists. The fire destroyed his home, artworks, books, photographs and documents and pushed Martorell towards purposeful artistic creation. The experience left him with a profound understanding that out of the ashes, transformation and grace are born.
In 2007, Martorell was selected as a Wilbur Marvin Visiting Fellow (Winter Semester 2008) at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University. While Martorell in residency at the Fogg Museum at Harvard, he created his own interpretations of the masters. He lectured on how the dynamic cycle of creation passes through destruction, imparting ways of re-creating and forging new relationships. Martorell keeps busy at painting, drawing, installation and performance art, graphics, set and costume design, theatre, films, TV, radio and writing for the press. He has published two books. Widely exhibited in Latin America, the Caribbean, the United States, Canada, and Europe, Martorell ́s artwork is found in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art (NYC), the Museum of Modern Art (NYC), El Museo del Barrio (NYC), The Library of Congress (DC), Princeton University Library, Museum of Modern Art (DF), Casa Las Americas (Cuba), Museo de Arte de Ponce (PR), Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña (PR), and the University of Puerto Rico Museum, among others.
About Paloma Suau

Nacida en San Juan, Puerto Rico, Paloma Suau, obtiene su bachillerato de cine Tisch School of the Arts, de NYU en 1994. En 1996, Paloma establece Ninguna Ciencia, su casa productora y desde entonces se ha destacado como directora, escritora, productora y editora de documentales, cortos, videos musicales, especiales de televisión. comerciales y espectáculos en vivo. Paloma ha trabajado con artistas de la talla de Rubén Blades, Miguel Bosé, Ricky Martin, Juanes, Celia Cruz, José Feliciano, Marc Anthony y Juan Luis Guerra, entre otros.
Del 2000 al 2007, Paloma tuvo a cargo “El Especial del Banco Popular”, un proyecto musical-documental que enfoca y celebra las tradiciones musicales de Puerto Rico y América latina. En el 2004, uniendo fuerzas con la laureada directora Susan Koch, Paloma co-dirige “DreamMakers”, un documental acerca de gente que supera circunstancias de dificultad extrema gracias a una visión clara y valores sólidos. Del 2007 al 2008, Paloma co-escribe, co-dirige y edita la serie de comedia para televisión "Elena Santos".
En el 2009 Paloma realiza su corto “Palomitas” basado en el aprendizaje con su maestro y doctor David Simon, co- fundador del Centro Chopra. Del 2010-2011, Paloma co-dirige y hace la fotografía principal de “The Five Awakenings”, un documental acerca de David. Tuvo la oportunidad de acompañar a este reconocido neurólogo y autoridad del Ayurveda en Estados Unidos cuando se vio obligado a confrontar su propia mortalidad al ser diagnosticado con un tumor cerebral incurable. Esta experiencia solidificó la pasión de Paloma por el Ayurveda, la Meditación y la consciencia.
En el 2012 Paloma dio por concluído un proyecto de 9 años con el legendario Miguel Bosé en el documental íntimo: “Family Life”.
En el 2015 Paloma comienza el documental “El Accidente feliz” en colaboración con el artista Antonio Martorell. Este proyecto, que verá la luz en el 2018 explora la vida y obra del artista desde la perspectiva personal de Paloma. Actualmente, Paloma se encuentra en la etapa de desarrollo de su primer largo metraje narrativo: Maestra Vida, de Rubén Blades. Basado en la ópera en salsa del mismo nombre, esta película musical espera filmarse en el 2020.

Paloma Suau is a director, writer, producer, and editor from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her body of work covers documentary portrait features; short film; television music specials; sitcoms; series; live concerts; music videos; and commercials. A film graduate of NYU Tisch School of the Arts ‘94, she founded her own production company, Ninguna Ciencia (No Rocket Science) in ‘96 in San Juan. To date, she has worked with among some figures like, Ricky Martin, Rubén Blades, Juanes, Celia Cruz, José Feliciano, Marc Anthony, Juan Luis Guerra, Julieta Venegas, and Miguel Bosé. She produced and directed the annual Puerto Rican Television show El Especial del Banco Popular, produced by Banco Popular de Puerto Rico. B roadcasting each December for over 30-years the special is a musical-documentary that celebrates Puerto Rican and Latin American vocalists, songwriters, composers, musicians, and artists of all kinds. Credits: Guitarra Mía, R aices , E ncuentro , 8 Puertas , Querido Reyes Magos, En Mi País . She co-directed the full-feature documentary Dream Makers with award-winning director Susan Koch. Paloma co-wrote, co-directed, and edited the television sitcom Elena Santos. In 2009, inspired by the learnings of her mentor, the late Dr. David Simon, co-founder of the Chopra Center, she made a short-film called Popcorn. She followed with The Five Awakenings , a documentary she co-directed and shot cinematography for on the life and work of Dr. Simon. For nine years, in concurrent time to her other projects, she worked on a documentary feature she finished in 2012, on the life of legendary Spanish performer Miguel Bosé, titled, Family Life (yet to be released). The Happy Accident is Suau’s latest documentary portrait film, this time, inspired on the life and works of beloved Puerto Rican artist Antonio Martorell (2019).
